English Language, Literature & Media Studies

English Language  

English Language is a core subject and students will study it throughout their school career at Staindrop.  In Years 7 and 8 students will study English for at least 3 hours per week.  Once students begin their GCSE courses, in Year 9, they continue to study English for at least 4 hours per week. 

The course at GCSE comprises 3 Units. 

  • Unit 1 - English Today - constitutes 20% of the final grade
  • Unit 2 - The Writers Craft - 40% of the final grade
  • Unit 3 - Creative Response - 40% of the final grade.

Assessment is by examination in June and controlled assessment.

English Literature

English Literature is a subject which some students may have the opportunity to study in the latter part of their English Language course.   English Literature is particularly useful for students wishing to go on to study English Literature at 'A' level.

Media Studies

Media Studies is an option subject.  This course will assist students in developing critical thinking and decision making skills.  They will gain a greater understanding of the media and its role in daily life.

Assessment is by

  • Two assignments
  • A practical production eg. a trailer, advert or magazine
  • A controlled written test
