BTEC First Certificate in Horse Care

Students can opt for Horse Care in Year 8.  The award is equivalent to 2 GCSEs at A*- C.  This award is transferable to the BHS stage examination.   The course provides an excellent foundation in the principles and practical aspects of horse care.

At the end of the course students may wish to progress to the National Award in Horse Management or the National Diploma in Horse Care.   Others may seek employment as grooms/stud work, veterinary nurses, retail or riders in race yards.

The course consists of class tutorials, assignments and practical work at a local Equestrian Centre.  It is preferable for students opting for this course to have a keen interest in horses and some basic riding ability. 

Assessment is ongoing throughout the course and assignments involve the use of ICT with students being expected to have a good knowledge of the Office Suite.
